Retrofit Walls

ASC-WallDamp is a double sided, self adhesive sheet of material and it's two step application is simple and quick. Just remove the release paper and place WallDamp between every joint, every connection in your wall. The pressure sensitive adhesive of WallDamp glues the wall together and that improves it's overall structural integrity but more important is the polymer compound of the WallDamp sheet itself. WallDamp located between the wallboard and the framing members of the wall improves the soundproofing in three ways.

Blocks the sound board effect, the conduction of sound right
through the studs and wall cavity.

Quiets wallboard twang, the plate vibration of wallboard pinned
between the studs.

Eliminates wall shudder, structural vibration of the whole wall
pinned between the plates.

It is helpful to learn more about these three types of sounds. They can be easily stimulated in any wall. Try a few experiments. Have someone stand on the other side of a wall and scratch the surface, lightly with a pin. The scratching noise you hear is due to the conduction of sound through the structure of the wall. The sound starts in one sheet of wallboard, it passes into one side of the stud, through the stud, out the other side of the stud into the wallboard on your side of the wall. WallDamp placed between the wallboard and the framing greatly reduce the conduction of sound through the wall.

Here's another experiment. Make your fist and stick the middle knuckle out a bit. Now, walk slowly along a wall knocking on it and listen to the sounds. Where the sound seems dull, is where a stud is located. The sound will seem louder and more hollow at positions halfway between the studs where the wallboard is unsupported and freely vibrates. When WallDamp is sandwiched between the studs and the wallboard the hollow twang of plate vibration is damped out and the wall begins to sound more like an old, lath and plaster wall.

Finally the last experiment. Make your fist tight and notice the hard thickness at the heel of your fist. Walk along the wall and thump middle of a stud wall, about half way up with the tight heel of your fist. That low boom you hear is due to structural vibration of the whole wall. Wall shudder is caused when the upper and lower edge of the wall is pinned at the plates. The unsupported mid section of the wall is easily stimulated into a low frequency shudder. WallDamp sandwiched between the wallboard and framing damps out this whole wall motion.

ASC-WallDamp improves the soundproofing of any wall in three distinct ways with one simple application. Adding WallDamp strips between the wallboard and the framing glues the wallboard to the framing and then damps out conductive, plate and structural borne sound and vibration.
